The SAT is broken down into multiple categories each having their own range of scores that can be obtained.

The Writing section consists of an essay and multiple choice section. You receive a score of 1 to 6 on your essay portion and 1 point for each correct multiple choice question you answer correctly. If you don’t answer you receive zero points and if you guess incorrectly you loose 1/4 point. Those totals are then converted into a score between 200-800.

The Critical Reading and Math scores are computed similar to those of the multiple choice Writing section. A correct answer gives you one point, an incorrect answer costs you 1/4 point and if you leave it blank you receive zero points. Those scores are then converted into a score between 200-800.
